Baker & Daniels has deep roots in state and local tax law. We have been among the industry's leaders as far back as the 1920s when several of our lawyers wrote key provisions of Indiana's tax law, including the gross income tax and the sales and use tax. Today, our firm's tradition of comprehensive service continues as we help reduce the tax burdens of Indiana, multistate and multinational business clients. By tackling many difficult tax issues, our reputation has grown nationally, allowing us to counsel companies across the country.

Our state and local tax lawyers take a practical approach, combining and coordinating tax planning strategies with administrative and legislative solutions to fit each client’s individual needs. With our team members devoting almost all their practice to state tax matters for business clients, we have more than 100 years of collective experience. Several members of the team possess more than 25 years of practice in state and local tax matters.

We have worked with officials in assessing and government at all levels, an important factor when selecting a state tax advisor. Our experienced real estate analysts also provide field support on real estate assessment matters. Our seasoned team members are always accessible to a client’s in-house tax professional, responding promptly to requests and taking the steps to meet your needs. However, we also allow our clients to use their own tax department resources as much as possible to minimize cost, particularly on tax savings strategies and restructurings.

We have represented clients on substantial tax work in many states, including Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Utah, Montana and North Dakota. In one matter, we assisted a corporation facing major compliance issues in 20 states, helping it obtain tax clearances and resolutions to its outstanding issues.

We often offer "updates" on recent developments in tax law, including presentations to some of our clients' in-house tax professionals. These sessions enable the client to respond quickly to changes in the law and remain current on tax savings opportunities as they develop.

We remain involved on a number of fronts, actively participating in nationally recognized state tax organizations. Our lawyers also appear as frequent speakers at national seminars on state and local taxation, including national meetings by the Institute of Professionals in Taxation (IPT) and annual client seminars by the American Property Tax Counsel, of which Baker & Daniels is a founding member. Furthermore, two of our lawyers are contributing authors to national tax publications and organizations, including articles in the ABA Journal on State and Local Taxation, ABA Property Tax Deskbook as the Indiana contributing author and regular updates to the national Committee on State Taxation (COST). One of our lawyers was formerly Chair of the Indiana State Tax Board and Commissioner of the Department of Local Government Finance, the state agencies that issue assessing rules and oversee local assessments.
